The donation project

This summer, Shine Pride is collecting money for the Queer Lexicon via betterplace.

The Queer Lexicon is a non-profit organization and operates the German-language online contact point for sexual, romantic and gender diversity at queer-lexikon.net queer-lexikon.net

The offer is divided into information, including, for example, the queer glossary, an overview of pride flags or in-depth introductory texts on various queer labels – and support in the queer grievance box with answers to anonymous questions, in the rainbow chat in a queer online youth group or with a youth group map for queer groups throughout German-speaking Europe.

What does the Queer Lexicon offer?

In a nutshell: education and support in the area of sexual, gender and romantic diversity. Free for use, distribution and further processing (under the same license as Wikipedia, for example).

Education

The Queer Lexicon offers free and freely reusable information on sexual, gender and romantic diversity and is therefore primarily aimed at teenagers and young adults.

The offer includes a queer glossary, an overview of queer symbols and pride flags, further information texts on various labels, the queer calendar with queer holidays and memorial days and information brochures on binders, tucking, safer sex for queer people, coming out and queer labels – the Queer Lexicon also supplies these to advice centers and interested youth centers. Also free of charge if the institutions cannot otherwise afford to order them.

Assistance

The second major pillar of the Queer Lexicon’s work is support services. The queer grievance box offers the opportunity to ask all kinds of queer questions anonymously. The team answers up to 25 questions a week, and the demand here is very high. The Queer Lexicon also offers two moderated queer chats: the rainbow chat is for young people aged 13 and over, the queer chat is explicitly for adults. Both have fixed opening hours and are moderated by the Queer Lexicon in order to provide the safest possible environment for exchange, self-discovery and contact with other queer or questioning people. The youth group map provides information on queer youth groups throughout German-speaking Europe, so that young queer people can also find connections locally.

What can my donation achieve?

The Queer Lexikon is a non-profit organization – so every euro goes directly to support and educate people about sexual, gender and romantic diversity.

50 euros – one month’s administration costs: The Queer Lexikon has to manage itself. Bookkeeping, account management and telephone costs quickly add up to around 50 euros a month.

70 euros – one month’s server costs: The Queer Lexikon works entirely online. It operates its own IT infrastructure for collaboration and organization. This is data-efficient, secure, flexible and tailored to our needs.

100 Euro – a new edition of a brochure: The Queer Lexikon also offers some printed short brochures on queer topics for youth centers, counseling centers and other institutions where (also) queer people come together. These are often underfunded themselves, which is why the Queer Lexikon allows orders for these places free of charge. One edition comprises around 1,500 copies.

200 euros – a supervision for the team: The Queer Lexikon offers external supervision for the team once a quarter and when required. On the one hand, this is important to prevent conflicts within the team or to work through them. On the other hand, the team is also repeatedly confronted with social queer hostility through its work.

2,000 euros – a great training course for the team: To ensure the quality of the work and strengthen the team, it is important to the Queer Lexikon to provide the team with relevant training and courses. For example, part of the team was trained as first aiders for mental health as part of Mental Health First Aid at the beginning of the year.
